Plan your visit

You are very welcome at Heworth Christ Church, whether you’re exploring faith, returning to church after a break, or just curious.

We are a friendly Anglican church serving the local community, seeking to love God, love one another, and share the good news of Jesus in everyday life.

Finding us

Heworth Christ Church is on the north side of Stockton Lane, just east of Greenfield Park Drive, and almost opposite the entrance to Algarth Road and the bus stops.

If you’re using a sat-nav or map app, our What3Words location is: union.groups.lively

The church building is clearly visible from the road, with a small green space and roads leading to the main entrance.

Parking & Arrival

Please aim to arrive 10 minutes early if you can — it gives you time to park and get settled.

Parking is available down the road to the right hand side of the church, behind the church and on the grass verge to the right-hand side of the road. When you arrive, walk around to the front of the church and enter through the door on the left-hand side of the church as you look from the road.

A steward will be there to welcome you. Just let them know you’re visiting and they’ll make sure you’re comfortable and can answer any questions you might have.

What to expect

We’re a friendly and informal church, and you’re very welcome just as you are. There’s no dress code, no pressure to join in, and no expectation that you’ll know what to do. Things will be explained during the service so you know what’s happening.

Our services usually last around an hour and a half, include music, prayer, and a talk, and are suitable for people who are new to church as well as those who’ve been going to church for years.

If you have children, accessibility needs, or any questions at all, please ask — we’re always happy to help.

Life events

There are times in our lives when we turn to the Church for support and celebration. Christenings, weddings and funeral services are important markers in life, and we are here for you at those times and all times in-between.

  • Baptisms and Thanksgivings

The birth of a baby is a momentous time in the life of any family. God delights in the new arrival of a child and we would like to celebrate that event with the family.

Heworth Christ Church offers parents two types of celebration: Baptism or Thanksgiving for the Birth of a Child.

  • Weddings

Marriage was created by God to be one of the stabilising bedrocks of human society. It is the civic and, in a church wedding, the spiritual union of a man and a woman who commit themselves to each other for life.

Whilst couples who marry in a purely civil ceremony are just as married as couples who wed in church, for those with a Christian faith – however unsure or tentative that faith might be – marrying in church does add something special, indefinable and precious to their wedding.

  • Funerals

If you are reading this section because you have just lost a loved one, the whole worshipping community of Heworth Christ Church sends you their prayers and deepest condolences. We are truly sorry for your loss.

If your loved one wanted a Church of England funeral led by one of the ministers of Christ Church, please let your funeral director know. The funeral director will contact the Vicar, Ian, on your behalf to book the funeral location and date. Your loved one can have a funeral at Christ Church or at a local crematorium, as you prefer.

Room hire

Heworth Christ Church Parish rents out various rooms within its premises for use by community groups, charities, businesses and individual members of the public.

We also rent out Heworth Christ Church itself for business conferences or away-days, if a larger space is needed.
